You might not know it, but there are springs involved in the operation of your garage door that do all of the heavy lifting. Most homeowners probably don’t know what a torsion spring is or what it does nor do they know how to fix one if it ...breaks. Since, like most people, you probably fit into the category that knows little about these objects, contacting a garage door company would be the best thing to do if one happens to break.
Most garage door springs will break due to the wear and tear of everyday use. Ones that have been installed properly have a life of about 10,000 cycles. One cycle would be the door opening and closing. Consider that you will average at least two cycles a day – and most likely more – and 10,000 doesn’t seem like that big of a number. But can average between 5-15yrs depending of course on how much you use the door
All springs will fail eventually. Everyday usage will lead to that failure, but proper maintenance can help extend their lifespan. They can be sprayed with a lubricant a couple times a year and you can also do a balance test every so often. To check the springs, open the door about halfway. The door should stay still. If it sags, it is a sign that they will need to be replaced.
Springs can rust and, if they do, their lifespan is reduced dramatically. When the door is operated, the rust increases the friction on the coil. That friction further reduces the strength and life of the coil. As mentioned, spraying with a lubricant can help prevent rust and increase the life of your springs. Do so three to four times a year, especially in the winter, a time when it seems that more springs break.
